Sorting Emails with Star Colors in Gmail

To sort emails by star color in Gmail navigate to the Gmail settings and activate the option to enable multiple star colors. Once enabled, return to your inbox and start assigning different colored stars to emails that you want to mark as important based on your own criteria.

Once you have assigned different colored stars to your emails you can utilize specific search queries, such as ‘has:red-star,’ to instantly filter and sort your emails according to their star color.

Step 1 – Enable Additional Star Colors

1 – Open your Gmail inbox.

2 – Click on the settings icon at the top-right corner of the page.

3 – In the dropdown menu, select “See all settings.”

4 – Scroll down to the “Stars” section in the “General” tab.

5 – You will notice a collection of stars in the “Not in use” section. Click, hold, and drag the desired five colored stars from this section to the “In use” section.

6 – Once you have arranged the stars to your preference, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the “Save Changes” button. You will be automatically redirected back to your Gmail inbox.

Step 2 – Assign Colored Stars to Emails

1 – Start from your Gmail inbox and locate the email that you wish to assign a star to.

2 – Click on the empty star icon next to the email to assign it a star.

3 – To change the color of the star, simply click on the star icon again.

4 – Repeat steps 1 through 3 for all the emails you want to assign a specific star to.

Step 3 – Sort Emails by Star Color using Search Queries

1 – After assigning stars to your emails, place your mouse cursor in the search bar at the top of your Gmail inbox.

2 – Enter one of the following search queries to filter your inbox and display emails that have been assigned a specific star color:

  • has:yellow-star: This query will show only emails marked with a yellow star.
  • has:red-star: This query will display only emails marked with a red star.
  • has:orange-star: Use this query to view emails marked with an orange star.
  • has:green-star: This query will show only emails marked with a green star.
  • has:blue-star: Use this query to display emails marked with a blue star.
  • has:purple-star: This query will show only emails marked with a purple star.
  • has:red-bang: This query will show only emails marked with the red square with an exclamation point.
  • has:purple-question: This query will show only emails marked with the purple square with a question mark.
  • has:blue-info: This query will show only emails marked with the blue square with an “i” in it.
  • has:green-check: This query will show only emails marked with the green square with a checkmark.
  • has:yellow-bang: This query will show only emails marked with the Yellow square with an exclamation point.
  • has:orange-guillemet: This query will show only emails marked with the orange square with double arrows.
